Training in Microbiology, Virology and Infectious Diseases in Wales

Introduction

Infection Training in Wales offers a varied and interesting experience.  The Microbiology, Virology and Infectious Diseases departments are well-integrated, friendly and supportive, offering specialty training towards CCTs in ID/MM, ID/MV, MM and MV as well as Higher Specialist Scientific Training in microbiology. 

The 2 specialty training rotations ‘SE Wales’ and ‘SW Wales’ are based around Cardiff and Swansea respectively with the majority of training taking place centrally and short attachments in surrounding hospitals.  All on-site placements are within commutable distance, enabling trainees to live in one location for the duration of their programme. Some on-call activities may be undertaken remotely to provide specialist advice over a wider geographical area.

Trainees will be appointed to a specific rotation at the time of national recruitment.

SE Wales Rotation (Cardiff)

Cardiff is a vibrant capital city with easy access to the Brecon Beacons as well as beautiful beaches and is a perfect environment for a good work-life balance.

General microbiology and virology training is advantaged by the presence of on-site laboratories including a range of specialist reference services, as well as by the broad clinical microbiology experience afforded by consulting on a wide variety of specialties.  

Training in Infectious Diseases is based at the University Hospital of Wales, a large teaching tertiary referral hospital with dedicated Infectious Diseases beds and acute specialty retrieval/ intake. In addition, outpatient experience is gained in a wide variety of clinics including in general ID, HIV, TB, OPAT, Viral Hepatitis, and Migrant Health. Trainees are encouraged to get involved with clinical trials, research projects and to develop areas of special interest.

SW Wales Rotation (Swansea)

Swansea is situated in a beautiful location with easy access to the Brecon Beacons and the Gower peninsula, an area of outstanding natural beauty and is a perfect environment for a good work – life balance.

The microbiology/virology attachments are based in Singleton Hospital in Swansea where training is advantaged by the presence of on-site laboratories including a range of specialist reference services. In addition, broad clinical microbiology experience is gained by consulting on a wide variety of specialties. 

Training in Infectious Diseases is based at Morriston Hospital, a large teaching tertiary referral hospital with dedicated Infectious Diseases beds and a growing ID team. In addition, outpatient experience is gained in a variety of clinics including in general ID, HIV, TB, and Viral Hepatitis with additional opportunities tailored to individual interests and training needs. Trainees are encouraged to get involved with clinical trials, research projects and to develop areas of special interest.
